A Proud Pookie

Yeah, yeah, I know I haven't blogged in a while, but that's a whole other blog. R. and I were entertaining ourselves tonight by dinking around on the internet, and he told me about this movie he was in on YouTube. While most people might raise an eyebrow when their significant other admits that they are in a "movie on the internet," I didn't flinch -- I know my Pookie.

I just have to say this: I'm so stinkin' proud of the work he did while he was over there on his last deployment to Iraq and everyone who continues the mission. I love getting to see him in action, doing what he loves. That's my Pookie!

Christmas Thoughts

I've got so many things on my plate right now this minute that I shouldn't even be posting, but this song has really touched my heart this season.

I promise to be up and posting soon... Enjoy this song -- it really speaks my heart...

I Heart Joe(y) McIntyre

Please, ladies, we're all grown ups here. Please refrain from getting out your old BOP posters and throwing your panties at the computer screen. Really. So juvenile.

My friend recently went to this concert and I'm SOOOOO insanely jealous! I will say, however, that she redeemed herself:

I nearly peed in Cracker Barrell this morning at breakfast upon receiving this birthday gift!

I swear, this whole day has been full of flash backs. Birthdays are among some of the logical days in one's life to look back and reflect on days and years gone by. Ten years ago today I was more than likely celebrating my 22nd birthday with T. down at Texas A&M where we went to college together. Less than a month later Aggie Bonfire would collapse upon 12 fellow students and change our lives and the traditions of our dear school forever. Twenty years ago today I was turning 12 and trying to figure out who I was, being in the 6th grade at Travis Middle School. I looked up to those big 8th grade girls and their tidal wave bangs, thinking there was no way I would ever look that cool. The bathrooms constantly smelled of Aquanet hairspray, and we begged our parents to let us carry Esprit purses filled with fruity lip gloss, a myriad of pens and pencils, and sacred feminine supplies that most of us wouldn't need for another three or four years. Our lives were filled with cute, scrawny boys in ill-fitting football uniforms, side pony tails, longing to be popular and have a boyfriend, passing notes, and pouring over copies of BOP magazine to gaze adoringly into the eyes of our future husbands, for me, it was baby-faced Joey McIntyre of the New Kids On The Block. Oh, heavenly days! Would it be possible to find a boy that could ever pour out his heart to me to the words of this song? How I pined to slow dance forever in the arms of my Boston boy!

At any rate, just wanted you all to flash back with me. And hey, if the next time I see you all and one of you is wearing your jeans rolled up to proudly display your colored slouch socks and your t-shirt tied off to one side, I totally won't judge you. :)

Self-Medicating With Comedy

I swore I wouldn't do this any more. After sifting through the first 100 blogs on my site, I was apalled at how little writing I had done and how much "fluff and stuff" I had on my site. After all, this could be a ministry opportunity! Or a chance to develop myself as a writer and philosopher, a truly extraordinary wealth of knowledge and expression for the masses. But after the emotional build-up of sending Lil' G off to the first day of Kindergarten early tomorrow morning, missing R., missing my Chicas and being insanely jealous of the fellowship and laughter that those two noodles HisGirl and S4J got to have (you haterz! j/k -- love you bunches), and being, quite frankly, overwhelmed with what my schedule is going to be like from now until the end of the year, this is what I said:

Screw it! I need something funny...

(And before I go on, S4J's trip wasn't all sunshine and lollypops. She has been on such an amazing journey, one of mission that comes from the heart that God has given her for her brother, and it's been a long road. I'm so very thankful that HisGirl was able to steal away to go along on the journey to help bear the burden and so fulfill the law of Christ.)

OK, now... On with the show!

First of all, you guys need some GGG 101. My relaxed and groovy homey, JO, introduced me to this comedian, Eddie Izzard, a few months ago, and church just isn't the same now that we've been defiled by his insanity introduced to his comedy. Keep in mind he's British and runs off on tangents, which is funny in and of itself. In order to fully appreciate my snarky comments, watch these clips:

"Covered in Bees"

"Achilles and Hoover" (longer but funny)

Earlier tonight, I was over at Red Lipstick Diaries and she had a couple clips from a guy named Tim Hawkins. I nearly died laughing at him. He's a musical comedian, which puts him over the top in my book!

"Things You Don't Say To Your Wife"

Parents Are People (you will pee -- this is hysterical!!)

And this is a musical comedic shout-out to anyone who is involved on a praise team or church band:

For all you homeschooling families, this one's for you:

Lastly, this is the cleanest cut I could find of Rodney Carrington. I'll warn you now, he cusses, but he's painfully funny! I've been going through all his YouTube clips to find a relatively "clean" one and have been laughing so hard that my nose has stopped running and is stopped up now. SOOOO funny:

Pardon some of the language on this last one, but as Larry the Cable Guy says, "I don't care who ya are, that's funny right there!"
"A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones." -- Proverbs 17:22

MercyMe Has Done It Again

Now that I have recovered from the shock of what I have just seen, I can't wait to share it with you, the bloggy public. I will spare you with the long story of how I found it, but if you: a) love flashing back to old songs, b) love MercyMe, c) like acoustic/bluegrass music, d) any combination of the above, or e) ALL of the above, then you're gonna get such a kick outta this. I found myself dancing, harmonizing, musing at how they pulled this off, and eventually laughing until I cried. Enjoy!!!

For all of us who secretly practiced dancing like a mummy in front of our bathroom mirrors and wanted the red leather jacket to boot:

For all you "oldsters" out there who actually admit to doing the hustle in public:

For the hard-core Rick Astley fans, a tribute complete with hard-core triangle playing:

This was the best song in the group to me, and it had an ending reminiscent of the dear ole Chokemaster himself:

Not near as good, but should satisfy Vanilla Ice groupies:

And lastly, this one is dedicated to HisGirl and S4J (do you think they could've transposed down a step or two?!?):

Could You Pass The Latest Citizenship Test?

Click on the link above to take a 20-question sampling of the test given to people applying for citizenship in our country. I got a 90% -- I missed the question about senators and Susan B. Anthony. (I was waffling on the one about senators. Had I gone with my first answer, I would've gotten it right.)

I think this is timely, considering we celebrate our nation's independence on Friday. If you don't know the answers to some of these questions, and even if you do, take the time to invest a little more in what you know about our country and our government. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights is something that every single American should have a working knowledge of and be aware of what our politicians are doing that impacts our freedoms and laws. Yes, we should care about Supreme Court appointments and decisions. Yes, we should care about who is being elected to some obscure office. Look at Barak Obama's rise to fame and power. It seems like he just came out of nowhere and has somehow gotten past the Clinton dynasty to be our first black candidate for President. (Personally, I smell conspiracy alllll over that one, but we'll see...)

So enjoy! Post your scores back on here so we can see who is the nerdiest most well-informed among the group!

"A Living Prayer"

This is a song by one of my favorites, Allison Krauss and New Union Station. I would give major organs to get to meet her and just listen in on her and the band in a jam session sometime. Anyhow, the first time I heard this song, I felt like she had torn the words right out of my heart and my prayers -- between her and Chris Rice, those two really know what's on my mind. S4J, this is one of the songs you are charged with making sure is played at my funeral. JO, this is the song I want to do as a duet with you at church, if we can talk the Chokemaster into picking it for us!

Go To The Bathroom Before You Watch This...

...otherwise you might wet your pants like I almost did. I don't know what is funnier: the song, the kid, or the older guy. Actually, when he paused to take his socks and shoes off, I nearly lost it...

Go watch it fo' Jesus, mo' flicka!!

CrazySexyCancer

Oh MAN, this is worth a look... If we could all have the passion for life that this girl has, not just in hard times, but just in life in general, what power we would all have to change the world...

Click on the title of the blog to link to the site. Be sure to watch the trailer...

Do We Really Need More Of These?...OK, One More!

What Your Fridge Says About You

You like to be surrounded by things you love. You aren't exactly greedy, but you can be materialistic at times.

You are a very thrifty person. You don't like to waste money... or food.

You don't tend to be a very adventurous person, but you do surprise everyone now and then. You have a bit of a wild side.

You are responsible, together, and mature. You act like an adult, even when you don't feel like it.

You are likely single - and spending many nights alone at home.

Uh, can I just say, how freakin' depressing was that last line?!? Screw them! (Even though they're right, cheeky monkeys...)

Talkin' 'Bout My Generation...

Just for funsies...

You Belong in the Baby Boomer Generation

You fit in best with people born between 1943 and 1960.

You are optimistic, rebellious, and even a little self centered.

You still believe that you will change the world.

You detest authority and rules. Deep down, you're a non conformist.

Can I get a "whoot-whoot" from all my other Rosie sistahs that don't like to be bossed around either?!?!?

Webgem of the Week: "Tears of the Saints"

Let me just say, I heart Leeland. What an amazing CC band! (read: contemporary Christian) They have such a fresh, musically innovative way of spreading the Gospel message of love and forgiveness. This is one of my favorite songs of theirs, beat out by, "Carried to the Table," a song in reference to Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul, who is brought into a place of honor in King David's household, but that is a WHOLE other blog! (And quite possibly my devotion at Chicas '08, but I digress...)

Anyhoo, I hope this will bless everyone who watches the video and stirs up in us a few things:

1) The desire to serve the homeless in our country; and,

2) The desire to minister to the spiritually homeless in our own neighborhoods, churches, and families.

When you listen to the song, you immediately have images in your mind quite similar to what you see in the video; however, I think there's a whole other side to it that is even more unpleasant to the palate, and that is: how many of these "lost" and "crippled" are there walking around well-dressed, sitting next to us at church, working down the hall from us, driving nice cars and living in suburban homes? When is the last time any of us extended a truly listening ear to someone who felt alone in a crowd of friends because of something they were going through in life? I know I have felt like one of those people over the last 2 1/2 years. Just because someone is a Christian, calls themselves a Christian, or attends church regularly doesn't mean that they are not in need of someone to be the hands of Christ reaching out to them, even if their need is unspoken. When is the last time we quit focusing on being THE person who leads some "poor, lost soul" into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, and just focused instead on being examples of love and grace, stepping back to watch God do wonderful things that might or might not involve our interference?

May we be that light of love to the world for Christ. Amen.
